WEST DES MOINES, Iowa – February 28, 2012 – Iowans interested in learning more about the benefits of raising cattle under roof are invited to attend a cattle industry update and open house in Shenandoah, IA on Tuesday, March 13 from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

The morning session will be located at the Shenandoah Armory. The afternoon will feature a cattle building tour at the Brent and Steve Lorimor farm beginning at 1:30 p.m.

The event is sponsored by the Coalition to Support Iowa’s Farmers (CSIF), Summit Livestock Facilities, Iowa Cattlemen’s Association, the Page County Cattlemen and the Iowa Beef Industry Council. The event is open to the public and a complimentary lunch will be provided.

The morning session will feature Moe Russell from Russell Consulting Group discussing the advantages of raising cattle under roof including increased feed efficiency, rate of gain and the improved value of manure from cattle buildings. Becky Sexton of Twin Lakes Environmental and Kent Mowrer from CSIF will explain the rules and regulations impacting cattle farms today. The open house will showcase the economic development new livestock farms create and highlight the ways modern livestock buildings enhance animal care and safeguard the environment.

The Lorimor family will offer tours of the new facility, explain how livestock is raised and demonstrate the latest technology and handling facilities used in feeding cattle today. “This is a perfect opportunity for cattlemen to see what feeding cattle in a monoslope building is like and talk directly to farmers who are using it successfully,” says Ed Lehman with Summit Livestock Facilities.

Experts from CSIF will also be available to provide insight into interpreting rules and regulations impacting animal agriculture, enhancing relationships with neighbors and choosing good locations for new barns and feedlots. CSIF assistance is available to farm families at no charge.

“This event will provide attendees with the information they need to start or grow their livestock farm successfully and responsibly,” says Brian Waddingham, CSIF Executive Director. “If you are curious about the benefits of raising cattle under roof, or have questions on how to get started, this is an event you don’t want to miss.”

CSIF is a non-profit organization that assists livestock farmers who want help interpreting rules and regulations, guidance on good site locations for barns, counsel on enhancing neighbor relations and tips on how to protect the environment at no cost.
