The Buskohl family of Grundy Center was recognized this week as recipients of the ‘Gary Wergin Good Farm Neighbor Award’ during a ceremony attended by nearly 100 people at the Grundy Community Center in Grundy Center.
Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey presented the Buskohls with the award in front of family, friends and neighbors.
“I think it’s very important for farmers to tell their story before someone else does,” said Mark Buskohl. “There are many great stories to tell in rural Iowa today and we need to tell those stories to our friends, neighbors and local community members. My family is honored and humbled that we received this award and are surrounded by so many great neighbors in rural Grundy County.”
The Wergin Good Farm Neighbor award, sponsored by the Coalition to Support Iowa’s Farmers (CSIF), recognizes Iowa livestock farmers who take pride in doing things right. This includes caring for the environment and their livestock and being good neighbors.
The Buskohl’s raise hogs, cattle and sheep as well as operate a row-crop farm in Grundy County. Jesse Willis nominated the Buskohls for the award for being a great neighbor and community member. “The Buskohls spend countless hours helping others throughout the community,” says Willis. “Mark has a passion for the commodity producers to work together to have a voice in agriculture.”
“It’s great to recognize a farm family like the Buskohls who are not only great caretakers of their land and livestock, but are also very involved within their community. The Buskohls are another example of a great farm family that is passionate about agriculture, their neighbors and the community,” said CSIF Executive Director, Brian Waddingham.
The Wergin Good Farm Neighbor Award, presented by the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Iowa Ag Radio Network in partnership with CSIF, is presented nine times annually to an Iowa farm family who raises livestock. It’s given in honor of distinguished WHO Radio farm broadcaster Gary Wergin and recognizes families who take pride in being good neighbors and stewards of the land.
