Partnership Launched to Plant Windbreaks on Hog Farms

05-31-2018 in Green Farmstead Partner

WEST DES MOINES, IOWA– May 31, 2018 —The Coalition to Support Iowa’s Farmers (CSIF) announced a new partnership with Iowa Select Farms to plant trees on each of their farms through CSIF’s Green Farmstead Partner program. The partnership was announced recently at an open house near Williams for a new hog finisher.

CSIF’s Green Farmstead Partner program is an on-farm environmental initiative that assists in the planning and installation of trees and shrubs on new and existing cattle feedlots, dairies, hog barns and poultry buildings. The program offers the expertise of 26 nursery professionals around the state. Since the program began in 2009, more than 70,000 trees and shrubs have been planted on livestock farms across Iowa.

In addition to enhancing neighbor relations, improving aesthetics, controlling snow deposition, and saving energy, Iowa State University research shows that properly designed tree and shrub plantings can also reduce odor by 10-15 percent.

“The Green Farmstead Partner Program is really about being committed to your neighbors and community,” said CSIF Executive Director, Brian Waddingham. “This new partnership underscores Iowa Select’s commitment to going above and beyond what is required of them and I commend them for becoming a Green Farmstead Partner to help in the overall success of livestock agriculture in the state,” Waddingham said.

One of the Green Farmstead Partner program’s participating nurseries, Frazier Nursery from Vinton, designed the windbreak and planted the 80 trees and 82 shrubs at the site which will be stocked with pigs this week.

The Green Farmstead Partner Program is a collaborative effort involving the Coalition to Support Iowa’s Farmers, Trees Forever and the Iowa Nursery and Landscape Association (INLA).

Farmers interested in participating in the Green Farmstead Partner program can get started by contacting the coalition at 1-800-932-2436 or visiting www.supportfarmers.com/greenfarm.

CSIF is a non-profit organization that assists livestock farmers who want help interpreting rules and regulations, guidance on good site locations for barns, counsel on enhancing neighbor relations and tips on how to protect the environment at no cost. This positive, solutions-based approach to helping livestock farmers grow is a collaborative effort involving the Iowa Beef Industry Council, Iowa Cattlemen’s Association, Iowa Corn Growers Association, Iowa Farm Bureau, Iowa Pork Producers Association, Iowa Poultry Association, Iowa Soybean Association, Iowa Turkey Federation and the Midwest Dairy Association. For more information, call 1-800-932-2436 or visit www.supportfarmers.com.
