CSIF Financing and Farm Succession Conference Draws Over 200 Farmers

WEST DES MOINES, IOWA – December 7, 2025 –

Industry experts offered practical strategies to help Iowa livestock farmers secure financing and plan successful farm transitions.

More than 200 livestock farmers from across Iowa gathered on Thursday, November 20, at the FFA Enrichment Center in Ankeny for the 20th annual Farming for the Future Conference. The event, hosted by the Coalition to Support Iowa’s Farmers (CSIF), focused on financing and farm transition planning.

Access to capital remains one of the greatest challenges for new and established livestock farmers. To address this challenge, CSIF assembled a conference lineup focused on budgeting and building a strong balance sheet—key tools for financing a first livestock barn or expanding an existing operation.

Experts addressed tax considerations, cost-share programs, and practical tips for managing living expenses, giving attendees a comprehensive view of financial planning, farm succession, and the agricultural economy. “Iowa remains the top state to raise livestock. With strong corn and soybean markets, it’s a good year to think about marketing your grains through livestock,” said Christopher Pudenz, Economics and Research Manager of the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation. Speakers also emphasized strategies such as leveraging cost-share programs and monitoring cost of living to improve long-term financial stability.

Steve Bohr of Farm Financial Strategies highlighted that nearly 60% of landowners are now over 65 – the highest percentage in history. With many of these farmers looking to retire, it is more crucial than ever to provide young farmers with the necessary tools to continue growing and maintaining Iowa’s stance as a leading agricultural state. “There is a perfect storm happening in agriculture, particularly with land transitioning and cash flow challenges. Understanding these dynamics and positioning yourself to protect your farm as this storm unfolds is critical for the next generation,” said Bohr. He also stressed the importance of tools like strong balance sheets and clear family communication to navigate transitions successfully.

“This year’s conference was designed to provide Iowa’s livestock farmers with the tools necessary to make successful, economically beneficial decisions that will have a positive impact on their bottom line,” says CSIF Executive Director Brian Waddingham. “The insight offered in the presentations and in conversations provided unique perspectives that may help farmers determine how best to finance or transition their livestock farm.”
