Managing Nutrients & Manure

With fall arriving and manure hauling in affect this is a good time for a reminder about manure management plans (MMP) as well as nutrient management plans (NMP). These are required for producers that hit animal unit (AU) thresholds. If a producer exceeds 500 AU in total confinement, a MMP is required while a NMP is required once a producer hits 1,000 AU in open feedlots.

Regulations are specific to the type of feedlot and size of the operation. Both plans have restrictions on application of manure that are based on the nutrient levels of the manure as well as the nutrient levels of the field you plan to apply on. There are rules that control the time of year and conditions that a producer can and cannot apply manure.

Separation distances are also a factor when applying manure depending on the type of application you use. For more information on separation distances refer to DNR’s fact sheet.

If you have any questions about manure management plans or nutrient management plans, please give CSIF a call 800-932-2436.
