Good Farm Neighbors in Iowa County

Alan and Sara Mohr and family received the 171st Wergin Good Farm Neighbor Award on Friday, June 2, 2023, on their family’s farm in Marengo. The Mohrs were joined by nearly 300 friends, family, community members, and industry representatives to celebrate this honor.

Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig presented the award to the family sharing that the day was a celebration of the Mohrs’ dedication to doing the ‘right thing’ on their operation. “For four generations, the Mohr family has led by example in being stewards of their land and livestock,” said Secretary Naig.

The Mohrs own and operate Cornfed Farms, LLC, where they grow corn and soybeans, run a small cow-calf herd and maintain a 1,000-head cattle feedlot. Providing the highest quality of animal care to their livestock, utilizing technology to track cattle health, implementing conservation practices, and incorporating cover crops on their operation is how the family cares for the well-being of their land and livestock.

Prior to attending Iowa State, Klemme grew up on her family’s cattle and row crop farm in eastern Iowa. Growing up, she was actively involved in both 4H and FFA spending time in livestock, communication, photography, and equipment restoration projects at the county and state levels.

In the Industry

What Farmers Need to Know Before Converting Infrastructure on the Farm

You’ve decided you want to expand or diverse your operation. Your first consideration may be to convert existing infrastructure on the farm, such as a confinement barn or open feedlot. Before you get started, it’s important to consider the rules and regulations that apply to your plans. “No matter the size of your operation, what species you’re raising or production practices you’re following — there are rules,” says Brian Waddingham, executive director for the Coalition to Support Iowa’s Farmers.
