“The Wergin Good Farm Neighbor Award just speaks of Iowa. It defines us,” says WHO Radio Farm Broadcaster Bob Quinn. WHO Radio, along with the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, and the Coalition to Support Iowa’s Farmers present the award to Iowa farmers who take pride in doing things right and who go above and beyond as environmental stewards and animal caretakers. CSIF has presented 179 awards in its 20 years of existence.

LIVESTOCK FARM INSPECTIONS

 

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) continues to have a presence in the state with on-farm inspections. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) also inspects, investigates complaints, and responds to emergency spill situations. Because these situations usually occur with little or no notice to the farmer, it is important that livestock and poultry farmers are prepared to be inspected at any time.

Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig encourages eligible Iowa farm owners to apply for Century or Heritage Farm recognition as part of the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship’s Century and Heritage Farm Program. The program was created by the Department and the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation to honor families who have owned their farms for 100 years and 150 years, respectively.
