WEST DES MOINES, IOWA – June 22, 2018 – Jason and Gene Folsom and family were honored with the Wergin Good Farm Neighbor Award on Tuesday, June 19, 2018, at the Calhoun County Expo Center. Nearly 80 friends, family members and industry representatives were in attendance to show support and appreciation for the family.

Division Director of the Regulatory Division at the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, Steve Moline presented the award sponsored by the Coalition to Support Iowa’s Farmers (CSIF), the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, and WHO and WMT radio stations.

Friend and fellow Calhoun County Farm Bureau board member, Darcy Maulsby nominated the Folsom family for the award. “Jason is a dedicated livestock producer who does things right and cares about protecting the environment,” says Maulsby. “He provides proper nutrition, follows biosecurity standards closely, and maintains a good working relationship with a veterinarian. All of this helps him provide healthy, nutritious, affordable food.”

Folsom’s environmental stewardship, animal husbandry practices and community involvement were highlighted at the award ceremony. “We hold ourselves to a high standard, if you’re not a good caretaker and you’re not doing your job, you’re not going to be feeding pigs so it’s in our best interest to do the best we can,” says Folsom who is now the 6th generation on his farm in Rockwell City, Iowa. Folsom has served on the Calhoun County Farm Bureau board for 14 years and is currently their voting delegate. He also serves as a District 4 representative for the Iowa Corn Growers Association.

The Wergin Good Farm Neighbor Award, presented by the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship and Iowa Ag Radio Network in partnership with CSIF, is awarded to Iowa farm families who raise livestock, and are good neighbors and stewards of the land. The award is given in honor of distinguished late WHO radio farm broadcaster, Gary Wergin.
