Rebuilding Windbreaks, Strengthening Farms

WEST DES MOINES, IOWA – July 8, 2026 – For more than 600 Iowa farmers, strategic tree plantings have done far more than improve curb appeal—they’ve helped protect livestock farms, reduce odors, manage snow, and strengthen relationships with neighbors. Through the Coalition to Support Iowa’s Farmers’ Green Farmstead Partner Program, more than 80,000 trees have been planted across the state since 2009, giving livestock farmers access to free on-site consultations and customized planting plans developed by professional nursery and landscaping experts. Made possible through a partnership with Trees Forever and the Iowa Nursery & Landscape Association, the program is helping farmers build more resilient, functional and welcoming farmsteads. 

For many livestock farmers, the value of a well-designed windbreak becomes clearest after a major weather event—or when day-to-day challenges like drifting snow and exposure begin to take a toll. That was the case for eastern Iowa farmer Steve Schnormeier, who turned to the program after storm damage left much of his existing windbreak in need of restoration. 

Steve Schnormeier, who raises beef cattle, hogs, corn, soybeans, and alfalfa, participated in the program after the 2020 derecho damaged much of his existing windbreak. Through CSIF’s Green Farmstead Partner Derecho Grant, Schnormeier partnered with Frazier Nursery to establish new tree plantings and restore wind protection around his farm. 

Through the program, Schnormeier planted pine, maple, and hackberry trees on his farm. He said he is looking forward to additional protection from snow and wind that the trees will provide. Schnormeier also shared that he recently acquired a new hog barn and plans to plant additional trees because of the success of his first experience with the program.  He added that he had such a positive experience with Frazier Nursery that he intends to purchase about eight more trees through them soon. 

Beyond the free consultation and design plan, farmers may also be eligible for cost-share opportunities that can help offset planting expenses. More resources, including design considerations, case studies, university-based research on the effectiveness of trees and shrubs around livestock facilities, and application information, are available on the program’s website. 

For farmers considering the program, Schnormeier encourages them to “check into it and not be afraid to ask questions.” He noted that, “as farmers, we do not know everything,” and described the program as “good quality help from experts that doesn’t cost us as farmers anything.” Schnormeier said that kind of trusted, no-cost guidance can make all the difference for farmers navigating big decisions or unexpected challenges. His message to others is simple: if you need help, start with CSIF. “They are good at what they do and want to help others at no cost,” he said. 

The Coalition to Support Iowa’s Farmers was created by farmers to help farmers raise livestock successfully and responsibly. It’s a joint partnership involving the Iowa Beef Industry Council, Iowa Cattlemen’s Association, Iowa Corn Growers Association, Iowa Egg Council, Iowa Farm Bureau Federation, Iowa Pork Producers Association, Iowa Soybean Association, Iowa Turkey Federation and Midwest Dairy.
