Celebrate National Turkey Lovers’ Month

06-13-2012 in Turkey

Turkey isn’t only what’s for Thanksgiving dinner– it’s enjoyed by Americans year-round.  This may surprise you, but June is National Turkey Lovers’ Month!

An estimated 46 million turkeys are consumed at Thanksgiving. However, two-thirds of the turkey produced annually is consumed during months other than November, making June a great time to recognize Iowa’s turkey farmers for providing us with delicious, high quality turkey products.

Turkey can be served in a variety of ways for each meal of the day.  It is high in protein, which is important for building lean muscle mass and staying active. In fact, a three-ounce serving of boneless, skinless turkey breast contains 26 grams of protein, only one gram of fat and zero grams of saturated fat.

Iowa is home to over 10.5 million turkeys and ranks ninth nationally in turkey production.  The impact of raising and processing turkeys on Iowa’s economy is huge – it generates over $1.5 billion every year!

“Iowa’s turkey industry generates significant economic activity and employment opportunities in the state,” says Brian Waddingham, Executive Director of the Coalition to Support Iowa’s Farmers.  “Turkey Lovers Month is a great time to fire up the grill and enjoy the great taste of turkey made possible by Iowa’s farm families who work hard to put it on tables of consumers around the world.”

In celebration of your favorite bird, why not make a special feast everyone will love.  Show your support for Iowa’s turkey industry by firing up the grill and enjoying a turkey tenderloin, steak or drumstick tonight.  If you don’t have time to grill, stop by your local Subway or Jimmy John’s and enjoy Iowa turkey on the go.  For more information and delicious turkey recipes, please visit www.iowaturkey.com.
