The Coalition to Support Iowa’s Farmers, launched in 2004, has helped more than 1,500 farm families raise livestock responsibly and successfully. This includes the implementation of best management practices that enhance air, soil and water quality. Along the way, CSIF identified a need for farmers to receive technical assistance in planning for tree plantings so that vegetative buffers meet the goals of each family and their farm. The Green Farmstead Partner Program aggregates the expertise of farm and environmental communities in this important effort.
The program creates a turn-key way for livestock farmers to research the benefits of tree plantings for their farm, identify and contact trained nursery professionals to assist in the planning process, purchase appropriate vegetation and make plans for the ongoing maintenance of their vegetative buffers. The program also offers opportunities for farmers to network with other families to learn how vegetative buffers work for other livestock farmers.
Through the Green Farmstead Partner program, farmers can be assured that the nursery professionals who are listed on this site have been trained on the special considerations of planting trees around livestock and poultry barns and feedlots. The Green Farmstead Partner Program is a long-term effort that will continue to evolve as farmers and nursery professionals implement environmental buffers and provide feedback. Field days will be held throughout the state promoting this innovative, on-farm environmental program. Check back to this site often for additional information!
Finally, the Coalition to Support Iowa’s Farmers will provide families with a 3-foot-by4-foot personalized sign for display near their vegetative buffer once they complete project. More information about how to apply for a sign can be found on this website.
