Young Farmer Hosts New Hog Barn Open House

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa – July 15, 2014 – It’s no secret that farming is a tough business to get into, but it’s even more difficult if you’re a young farmer. Families, neighbors and community members are invited to attend an open house and complimentary lunch Tuesday, July 22 from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. to tour Allison Brown’s new hog barn located at 1049 200th Street in Russell, Iowa.

The open house, sponsored by the Coalition to Support Iowa’s Farmers (CSIF), Eichelberger Farms, Wayne County Farm Bureau, Precision Structures Incorporated, Farm Credit Services of America and Southern Iowa Green Solutions, will offer tours of the new barn, explain how livestock will be raised and showcase new technology and environmental safeguards she is using.

“This community is important to me; it’s my home. This hog barn gives me the opportunity to invest in my community while carrying on my family farm’s legacy that started eight generations ago,” said Allison Brown.  “I look forward to sharing information about the new innovations with this hog barn and answer questions.”

Experts from CSIF will also be available to answer questions and provide insight into interpreting rules and regulations impacting animal agriculture, enhancing relationships with neighbors and choosing good locations for new barns and feedlots.

“It takes a great deal of time and effort to get a livestock farm started and can prove challenging for anyone, but especially for a young and beginning farmer like myself,” Brown said. “It was critical to have the assistance and support of my parents as well as the Coalition to make this possible.”

CSIF was started 10 years ago by farmers for farmers to help them successfully manage changes to their livestock operations. CSIF provides confidential, customized assistance to farm families at no charge.

“Iowa livestock farmers are community-minded and take great pride in their work and commitment to the well-being of their animals and the environment,” says Brian Waddingham, CSIF executive director.  “It’s also no secret that livestock production has a positive impact on the local economy.  The construction and day-to-day operation of this hog barn will create 11 jobs and have a $1,618,074 economic impact to Wayne County in the first year alone.”

CSIF is a non-profit, non-lobbying organization that assists livestock farmers who want help interpreting rules and regulations, guidance on identifying good site locations for barns, counsel on enhancing neighbor relations and tips on how to protect the environment at no cost.  This positive, solutions-based approach to helping livestock farmers grow is a collaborative effort involving the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association, Iowa Corn Growers Association, Iowa Farm Bureau, Iowa Pork Producers Association, Iowa Soybean Association, Iowa Turkey Federation and the Midwest Dairy Association.  For more information, call 1-800-932-2436 or visit www.supportfarmers.com.
