RULES FOR SMALL ANIMAL FEEDING OPERATIONS (SAFO’s)

The Coalition to Support Iowa's Farmers (CSIF) staff make a number of visits to livestock farms about proposed confinements under 500 animal units (ex: less than 500 head of cattle or less than 1,250 head of hogs). Many times we hear the comment “There are no rules we need to follow for this size of barn, correct?" This is not the case with proposed confinements of this size.

Farmers need to be aware that there are rules to follow as the Department of Natural Resources is taking a closer look at the size of all animal feeding operations, including SAFO’s. All confinements need to meet basic setbacks to water sources, wells, and soil types, including alluvial soil or the 100-year flood plain. If you have questions about your proposed confinement project, feel free to give CSIF a call at 1-800-932-2436 or go to our website at www.supportfarmers.com.
