As you enjoy sweet summer treats such as ice cream or frozen yogurt, remember to salute Iowa’s dairy farmers in celebration of National Dairy Month! Iowa’s dairy farmers work around the clock, 365 days a year to provide a variety of products that are safe, wholesome and affordable.

Dairy products fuel the body with nine essential nutrients including calcium, potassium and Vitamins A and D. As an excellent source of protein, dairy also builds strong bones, repairs muscle tissue and provides a lasting feeling of satiety.

Another unique dairy component includes whey. Whey is a natural protein that contains all essential amino acids the body requires. As a dairy by-product, whey supports the development of lean muscle mass and complements other food flavors when added as a supplement.

In addition to dietary benefits, dairy products also have significant economic value. For example, milk is consumed at about 25 cents per eight ounce serving. When compared to other foods, the power of dairy nutrients can’t be beat.

Nutrient Comparisons: Did you know?

  • 1 cup of milk is equal to the calcium value found in 3 cups of cooked broccoli
  • 8 ounces of low-fat plain yogurt contains 490 milligrams of potassium, the same as one banana

Dairy farmers are committed to providing your favorite products responsibly and sustainably. Over the years, farmers have been successful in increasing milk yield while decreasing carbon emissions and the amount of cropland and water used.

Today, over 1000 dairy farms dot the state. On a national scale, Iowa ranks 12th in number of milk cows and produces 540 million gallons of milk annually.

Dairy is essential to a happy, healthy lifestyle. This summer, sport that milk mustache and sticky ice cream fingers in support of Iowa’s dairy farmers!
