FROM THE INTERN

by Megyn Walston, Communications Intern

I have always been passionate about educating consumers on where their food comes from. With today’s media and misconceptions that are being portrayed daily, this task has become even more important for the future of agriculture. In June, I had the opportunity to visit Cinnamon Ridge Farms in Donahue, Iowa, to learn more about their operation and how they are working to educate the public. Read more.

NEIGHBOR RELATIONS

by Kent Mowrer, Senior Field Coordinator

I recently had the opportunity to watch a presentation on neighbor relations from Paul Kostboth, owner of A1 Development Solutions, while attending Iowa Swine Day. He brought up a good point on “perspective” that farmers need to consider when preparing to visit with neighbors about adding a new livestock barn to their farm. A farmer has the “perspective” of modern livestock agriculture and how it has improved from back in the day. However, a neighbor may have the “perspective” of back in the day on grandpa’s farm and how that was a better way to raise livestock than today. These neighbors may not understand today’s livestock agriculture or appreciate it. Livestock farmers need to consider the neighbor’s “perspective” and educate the neighbor on the many benefits modern livestock agriculture provides today.
If you need help in developing a neighbor relations plan specific to your farm, contact the Coalition today.

CSIF PARTNERS WITH IOWA STATE FAIR’S AVENUE OF BREEDS

In celebration of Iowa’s diverse livestock industry, the Coalition to Support Iowa’s Farmers (CSIF) is proudly sponsoring the “Avenue of Breeds” at the Iowa State Fair for the eighth year in a row.

The 2018 Iowa State Fair runs August 9 – 19 and the Avenue of Breeds is one of the fair’s most popular attractions. Located in the northwest corner of the Swine Barn, the exhibit showcases 125 different animals and provides fairgoers with educational information about the livestock displayed. Members of the North Polk FFA chapter volunteer to answer questions from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm daily and also to tend to the animals throughout the fair.
