Contact: Brian Waddingham, Executive Director, 1-800-932-2436

The Werner family of Diagonal was recognized last week as recipients of the ‘Gary Wergin Good Farm Neighbor Award’ during a ceremony at the Diagonal Community Center.

Iowa Deputy Secretary of Agriculture Jay Johnson presented the Werners with the award in front of family, friends and neighbors.

“It’s very humbling to receive this award knowing there are so many other farm families worthy of this honor,” said Jim Werner.  “We don’t do anything different than other livestock farmers do on their farms.  We are truly honored and proud to be part of the community here in Ringgold County.”

The Wergin Good Farm Neighbor award, sponsored by the Coalition to Support Iowa’s Farmers (CSIF), recognizes Iowa livestock farmers who take pride in doing things right.  This includes caring for the environment and their livestock and being good neighbors.

The Werners have been actively involved in the cattle industry for 40 years and their family now has a 500-head purebred Angus cow herd in Ringgold County.  The Werners have four children who are all involved in the cattle operation or related businesses.

Trent Johnston nominated the Werners for the award for being great caretakers of their land, active community members and for being leaders in the cattle industry.  “The Werners represent what the Gary Wergin Good Farm Neighbor Award is all about – being a good neighbor, taking care of the land and their livestock and being active community members,” said Johnston.

“It’s great to recognize a farm family like the Werners who are so passionate about their land and livestock and go above and beyond to ensure their farm will be in the family for future generations,” said CSIF Executive Director, Brian Waddingham.  “The Werners are another example of a great farm family that that are truly committed to doing things right on the farm and giving back to their community.”

The Wergin Good Farm Neighbor Award, presented by the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Iowa Ag Radio Network in partnership with CSIF, is presented nine times annually to an Iowa farm family who raises livestock.  It’s given in honor of distinguished WHO Radio farm broadcaster Gary Wergin and recognizes families who take pride in being good neighbors and stewards of the land.
